Marta L2 Tunnel – SD-WAN Appliance

Marta L2 Tunnel is a complete appliance solution that merges geographically separate branches into a single Layer 2 broadcast domain over the internet. Built on OpenVSwitch and running on FreeBSD or Debian, it deploys as hardware or a virtual machine, installs on-site with a single command, and is operated from a centralised web management panel. Q-in-Q (VLAN inside VLAN) carries multiple customer trunks; automatic failover and encrypted tunnelling deliver a single L2 segment across distributed offices without classic IPsec/MPLS complexity.

Features & Capabilities

20 features
L2 tunnelling: branches share a single broadcast domain — ARP, DHCP and mDNS flow naturally end-to-end
OpenVSwitch (OVS) data plane; native build on FreeBSD and Debian/Ubuntu
VLAN-in-VLAN (Q-in-Q / 802.1ad) — tunnels carry branch trunks transparently
Hardware appliance or virtual machine deployment (VMware, Proxmox, KVM, Hyper-V)
Single-command field installation: kur.sh + sdwan.conf — operational in under 10 minutes
Multi-branch topology: hub-and-spoke or full mesh, dynamic tunnel discovery
Centralised management panel: configuration push, state monitoring and alerting for the whole fleet from one dashboard
Encrypted tunnel: optional WireGuard / IPsec — uses the internet as a secure L2 transport
Automatic failover: tunnel restores within seconds via secondary WAN (4G/LTE/backup fibre) when the primary link drops
Bandwidth control: per-VLAN QoS, DSCP marking and traffic shaping
MTU optimisation: jumbo frame support, automatic MTU discovery and fragmentation handling
Loopback and health checks: periodic ping/jitter/loss measurement on every tunnel endpoint, live metrics on the dashboard

Technical Details & Architecture

13 specs
1
Data plane: OpenVSwitch 3.x — kernel module (if_tap on FreeBSD) or tun/tap (Linux); OpenFlow 1.3+ control plane
2
Control plane: ovsdb-server (optional RAFT cluster) + ovs-vswitchd; FreeBSD rc.d/sdwan or Debian systemd unit
3
Tunnel protocols: GRE, VXLAN, Geneve or IPsec variants; optional WireGuard wrapper for low overhead
4
Q-in-Q (802.1ad): provider tag = tunnel ID, customer tag = branch VLAN; transparent transport over trunk ports
5
Multi-site config: SITES variable defines name/SRC/DST triples per site; declarative sdwan.conf
6
Management panel (planned): centralized web UI for config push (Ansible / Salt / native API), state monitoring, version management; on-appliance agent does pull-based config sync
7
Field install: pkg install openvswitch + bash + sudo + vim-console (FreeBSD) or apt install openvswitch-switch (Debian); script bundle under /usr/local/share/sdwan
8
WAN/LAN interface split: WAN_IFACE for internet, LAN_IFACE for branch side; trunk VLAN list in TRUNK_VLANS
